Admin Help Notes

Important things to remember when making changes.

Saving Changes

As you make any changes to text boxes a red border will appear around that text box. To save your changes, either find the nearest Save button (any will do), or you can also use the Save shortcuts on your system. Windows CTRL and 'S', Mac cmd and 'S'. A green tick will then appear next to the changed box.

If you make changes that you do not want to commit, then simply refresh the screen without saving, or exit the Admin page.

Formatting text.

If you see the formatting controls above a text area then you may use them to apply some formatting to the text section.

In turn from the left the formatting icons allow text to be:

  • Made Bold
  • Italicised
  • Underlined
  • Apply a link
  • Insert an image
  • Format as a heading
  • Align

First highlight with your cursor the word or words that you want to apply formatting to and then click on the appropriate icons to access these controls.

Seeing your changes on the site

Always remember that you will need to refresh the page you have modified as your browser will hold a copy of the page that was last loaded and show you that. If the refresh doesn't work, then clear out your browser history as well.

Headings

Use the Paragraph Format dropdown icon to format the size of heading you need.

Keep headings on a separate line and the text that follows them on a separate line as well. If you are typing directly into the Admin page you should have no problems with this. However, if you copy from Word, or elsewhere you may encounter issues where the following text is also made into the heading style. Make sure that there is a carriage return character (the new line key) between the heading, the preceding line of text and the lines of text that follow it.

Which headings should I use?

H1 is the biggest heading and is usually what you see on a page as the page title. There should only be one H1 on a page so don't use that as its already there. H2 is a subtitle. That may also be there already so avoid.

So when editing text you would probably be best using H3 and H4 with H3 at the top of the body of text and H4 used for sub sections within the H3 sections.

Text Alignment

The text alignment tool at the top of each text box can be used to align text in different ways. Personally I favour the justify option which is the last option that appears in the drop down. To use this highlight the area of text you want to align and then click on the 'align justify' item on the dropdown.

Here's what I recommend:

1) Find the page you want to link to first and 'copy' the URL in the browser bar. For example https://www.yoursite.com being the page that you want to link to but it could be any page on any site.

2) In the Admin sections find the word or words that you want to be the linking text so for example 'construction' and highlight them by running your cursor over them.

3) Click on the insert link tool in the editing box (currently the 4th icon from the left). Where it says URL, 'paste' in the URL that you saved in 1) above and then click insert. Save your changes, refresh the page you have edited and test that the link works.

If you subsequently change the linking text, it can break the link but just repeat the above steps to re-establish the links again.

Colours

The colour palette in the editor is somewhat limited so please use this sparingly, if at all. It could be used to highlight particular words maybe, like you would used bold and underline.

Devices

Changes can be made from anywhere in the world that has an internet connection on any device so it is perfectly feasible to amend your website whilst on holiday from your smart phone.
